Tony Attwood: "Asperger's Syndrome Is Infectious"

I don't talk about Tony Attwood very much because I'm just not that interested when neurotypical people talk about autism. I don't really understand why anyone is.

But this is upsetting.

The more you live and work with aspie people, the more aspie you become.  It's a survival mechanism of the neurotypical.

It would be possible for him to relay similar ideas in a way that that did not promote bigotry.  It just doesn't occur to him.

Melody Latimer at AS Parenting says:

I’m sure that I don’t need to add anything here, but I will anyways. The idea that it’s a survival skill for children of Autistic parents to “act Aspie” is a poor characterization at best. Children will undoubtedly pick up characteristics from their parents by nature. However, using the term SURVIVAL SKILL means that they cannot survive without picking up those characteristics.

Not to mention, it’s quite possible to have many of those characteristics innate in the child of an Autistic parent due solely on genetics. It works in reverse as well, or else you wouldn’t have Broad Autism Phenotype for parents who exhibit some traits but are not Autistic themselves.
