I loved this story about the Peterson family from New Jersey:

Adam Peterson has autism. His mother Donna speaks eloquently about the obstacles and successes he has had:

"I would bring him into ShopRite and he would lose his mind because it was way too stimulating for him," she said. "The people, the noise, the lights, the colors Ð he couldn't take it. And I can't tell you how many times I'd be pushing him in a shopping cart and trying to help him cope and another parent would stop and say, 'Your child is terribly misbehaved.' "

"People don't understand," she said. They don't get autism. They don't understand that, for him to develop a tolerance, he has to be exposed to those situations."
